Skywatch Friday 1/9/09

For this week's Skywatch Friday, I am posting a few photos from my trip to California's Central Valley. The subject is a White-tailed Kite. Not an especially rare bird, having recovered somewhat from some population decline in the 80s due to habitat loss, but only seen in a few areas in the US. I find these elegant raptors simply beautiful. The name 'kite' comes from their ability to hover while foraging, in that they can maintain their position in the sky for period of time with little flapping of their wings while scanning the ground for for prey.
